World Cup Semifinal Props:
Spain–France and Argentina–England

Four teams are left, and the semifinal field is the four highest-ranked teams in the world. Mbappé and Messi are tied on eight goals at the top of the scoring chart. Here's how to approach the props for Tuesday and Wednesday.

⚡ Quick Verdict

Spain–France pits the tournament's best defense against a striker who has scored in every match. Argentina–England puts two teams that just went 120 minutes on four days' rest. Favor shots and saves over goals, respect Spain's back line, and treat any pick that depends on fresh legs on Wednesday with caution.

How the Quarterfinals Played Out

Last week we wrote that the quarterfinals rarely play the way they look on paper. Two of the four went to extra time, a penalty was saved after a long VAR review, and Spain finally conceded a goal.

France 2, Morocco 0 (Thursday, Boston)

Bounou saved an Mbappé penalty after a VAR review that took more than three minutes. Mbappé got his goal anyway, curling one in in the 60th minute, and Dembélé added a second six minutes later.

Morocco set up in a 4-6-0 — no recognized striker at all — and still couldn't hold out.

Spain 2, Belgium 1 (Friday, Los Angeles)

Fabián Ruiz scored in the 30th minute. Ten minutes later De Ketelaere scored the first goal Spain had conceded all tournament, in their sixth match, ending a run of 694 minutes without conceding. Mikel Merino came off the bench and scored the winner in the 88th minute — the second straight knockout game in which a Spanish substitute decided it.

England 2, Norway 1, after extra time (Saturday, Miami)

Schjelderup gave Norway the lead in the 36th minute. Bellingham equalized in first-half added time and scored the winner three minutes into extra time.

Neither Kane nor Haaland scored. Norway had a goal disallowed by VAR for a Haaland foul. Their first-ever quarterfinal ends there, and Haaland's tournament ends on seven goals.

Argentina 3, Switzerland 1, after extra time (Saturday night, Kansas City)

Mac Allister headed in a Messi cross in the 10th minute. Ndoye equalized in the 67th. Five minutes later Embolo was sent off for a second yellow card for simulation — a call that turned into a VAR mistaken-identity controversy.

Ten-man Switzerland held on until the 112th minute, when Julián Álvarez scored from 25 yards. Lautaro Martínez added a third deep into extra-time stoppage time.

⚽
Pick'em takeaway from the quarterfinals: two of the four matches went 120 minutes, and a red card shaped a third. If you haven't read your platform's rules on how extra time is settled for each prop, do it before Tuesday.

The Semifinal Schedule

The final is Sunday, July 19. Every semifinalist has two matches left either way — the final or the third-place match — which matters for the Golden Boot race below.

The Golden Boot Race, as of July 12

PlayerTeamGoalsStatus
Kylian MbappéFrance8Semifinal
Lionel MessiArgentina8Semifinal
Erling HaalandNorway7Eliminated
Harry KaneEngland6Semifinal
Jude BellinghamEngland6Semifinal

Mbappé has scored in every France match. Messi has eight goals in six matches. Bellingham has six — two in the Round of 16 against Mexico and two more against Norway, so four in two knockout games. Kane is on six but didn't score in the quarterfinal.

Four of the top five are still playing, and all four have two games left. Expect goalscorer props on all of them to be the most-picked on the board.

Spain vs France: Best Defense vs Hottest Striker

This is the semifinal the models like most. Opta's tournament projections, as reported by Al Jazeera on July 12, gave France a 34.05% chance and Spain a 23.45% chance to win the whole thing. Those are odds of winning the tournament, not of winning Tuesday's match.

The Mbappé question

A striker who has scored in every match will get a lot of Higher picks on his goal and shots props. The case against: Spain have conceded once in six matches. The case for: Mbappé still found the net against Morocco after having a penalty saved, and he takes France's spot kicks.

Our approach: if you want Mbappé exposure, a shots or shots-on-target prop is more stable than a goal prop. Shot volume doesn't require beating Spain's goalkeeper, only getting the attempt off.

Spain's bench

Spain's last two knockout wins were settled by substitutes — Merino twice, with Ferran Torres assisting the first. That's a reason for caution on Higher volume picks for Spanish starters in attacking roles: if the manager trusts his bench late, the starters' minutes get capped.

It's also a reason not to chase a substitute's props. A player who comes on in the 70th minute can score the winner and still finish well under a shots line.

The goalkeepers

Neither side has been a typical "underdog keeper" setup in this tournament, so the saves props here are less straightforward than in a mismatch. Treat saves as a game-script call. If you expect Spain to control possession, France's keeper is the side to consider; if you expect France to counter repeatedly, it flips.

Argentina vs England: Two Tired Teams

Both went 120 minutes on Saturday. Both get four days before Wednesday in Atlanta. That's the most important fact about this semifinal for props.

Fatigue and minutes

Extra-time legs on short rest raise the chance of early substitutions. That hurts Higher picks on volume stats that need a full 90 — passes, shots, tackles. It also raises the chance of the game opening up late, when tired defenders give space.

Picks that depend on a player going the distance are the riskiest on Wednesday's board. Shorter entries, fewer legs, and nothing that requires a specific player to finish the match.

Messi as a creator

Messi set up Mac Allister's goal against Switzerland and has eight goals of his own. If your platform offers assist or goal-plus-assist style markets, his creative role matters as much as his scoring. Check how each platform defines the stat before you pick it.

Bellingham and Kane

Bellingham has carried England through two knockout rounds with four goals. Kane has the penalties. In a tight semifinal, a single penalty can decide a goal prop, so penalty duty is a real factor on Kane's lines.

Discipline

Argentina's quarterfinal turned on a red card, and England played much of their Round of 16 match with ten men. Cards don't just affect the player sent off — they change the shot and pass volume for everyone on the field. There's no way to predict them, which is one more reason to keep these entries short.

💡
Correlation check: don't pair picks that pull against each other. A Higher on Mbappé's goals and a Lower on Spain's goalkeeper saves can't both easily hit — one needs France to break through, the other needs them not to test the keeper.

Three Kinds of Picks We're Avoiding

Some props get more attention in a semifinal than their odds justify. These are the three we're steering clear of this week.

1. The "every star scores" entry

It's tempting to build one entry with Mbappé, Messi, Bellingham and Kane all to score. All four have been prolific, and all four are popular. But goals are rare events even for elite strikers. A four-leg entry that needs four separate goals is a long shot dressed up as a sure thing. If you want the stars, take one or two and pair them with volume props.

2. Substitutes' volume props

Merino has shown how much a Spanish substitute can matter. That doesn't make his shots line, or any bench player's, a good pick. Minutes drive volume. A player who is likely to start on the bench is closer to a Lower than a Higher on any stat that accumulates, no matter how big his last goal was.

3. Anything before the lineup drops

With extra-time legs on both Wednesday teams and Spain's habit of rotating attackers late, the team sheet is the single most useful piece of information you'll get. Entering early saves you nothing and costs you the chance to dodge a surprise benching.

Building Your Semifinal Entries

Here's the workflow we're using for both nights:

  • Confirm lineups first. Pick'em has no late swap. A starter benched for rest is a dead pick.
  • Read the extra-time rules. The quarterfinals made this non-negotiable.
  • Lead with volume props. Shots, shots on target and saves over goals.
  • Treat Wednesday differently. Fatigue makes full-90 picks riskier for both England and Argentina.
  • Keep it to two or three picks. Use a Flex-style mode if you want a cushion against one bad moment.
  • Shop the line. PrizePicks and Underdog can post different numbers on the same prop. Take the better one.

Bankroll still matters at the end of a tournament. Two matches, high attention and big names are exactly when entries get oversized. The 1% rule applies to semifinals too.

PrizePicks vs Underdog for the Semis

Both list World Cup player props in eligible states — check your state. If you're choosing one, our Underdog vs PrizePicks comparison covers the differences. If you're running both, the payout breakdown shows how the play modes compare.

One more note on modes: in matches this tight, Flex-style entries that survive one miss are worth the smaller payout. A single penalty decision or red card can swing a pick that looked solid at kickoff, and the extra cushion keeps one bad moment from ending the whole entry.

For two high-profile matches, having both apps is the simplest edge available. The most popular props — Mbappé, Messi, Bellingham, Kane — are exactly where a small difference in the line is worth taking.

The Bottom Line

The semifinals bring together the four highest-ranked teams in the world, the two leading scorers, and two teams playing on tired legs. Be patient on Tuesday: Spain's defense is the main reason to avoid loading up on goal props, even for a striker who has scored in every match. Be careful on Wednesday: extra time on short rest makes every pick that needs a full 90 riskier.

Wait for lineups, favor volume, keep entries small, and shop the line.
